the scale of things to come...

a while ago, it seemed ludicrous to have a hard drive that exceeded a gigabyte. now, we routinely put multiple gigabyte thumb drives in our pockets. here is an article that i ran across today that seems unimaginable to me today, but will probably be routine a few years from now. these researchers have figured out a way to take ferrofluids (commonly used to manufacture speaker parts) and turn it into a memory storage device. the thing i find amazing is the capacity. the theory now is about a terabyte per square inch. "We are approaching memory density of several terabits or billions of bits per square inch, and we hope to be able to increase the memory density even further," relates Dietrich Hesse. it seems a little hard to fathom, but i'm sure it will be possible soon. here's the link to the article
